SS 304 vs SS 316 for Swings: Which Grade is Best?
When you buy a stainless steel jhula, the term "stainless" is relative. The quality entirely depends on the grade of steel used. At Vrundavan Steel Industries, we primarily use SS304 and SS316. But what is the difference?
Understanding SS 304 (The Standard Gold Standard)
SS 304 is the most common austenitic stainless steel. It contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel.
Understanding SS 316 (Marine Grade)
SS 316 has a similar composition but with the critical addition of 2-3% Molybdenum. This makes it drastically more resistant to corrosion from chlorides (salt).
The Cost Difference
SS316 is significantly more expensive than SS304 due to the molybdenum content. A swing made of SS316 will cost 25% to 40% more than the exact same design in SS304.
The Vrundavan Recommendation
If you live in Gandhinagar, a standard Indian city, or are buying an indoor swing anywhere in the world, SS304 is perfect. You do not need to spend the extra money on SS316.
However, if you are installing the swing on an outdoor balcony facing the ocean, tell our manufacturing team, and we will custom-build your jhula using marine-grade SS316.
