The Complete Guide to Sankheda Furniture Origin and Making

Walk into any prestigious Gujarati home, and you will likely see a vibrant, hand-painted wooden swing. This is the iconic Sankheda Hichko, a testament to an artisanal craft that dates back over 150 years.

The Origins of Sankheda

Sankheda is a small census town in the Chhota Udaipur district of Gujarat. Legend has it that a spiritual ascetic arrived in the village and taught a local woodworker the specific art of lacquer painting to protect and beautify wood. Since then, the Kharadi community of the village has passed the craft down through generations.

The Unique Manufacturing Process

What makes a Sankheda swing unique isn't just the paint—it's the method.

1. Wood Turning (Sanghedo): Artisans shape teak wood pieces on a manual lathe machine.

2. Base Coating: The wood is coated with a tin-based paste, giving it a silver background.

3. Hand Painting: Intricate floral, peacock, or geometric motifs are painted using natural colors (traditionally extracted from plants and minerals).

4. Lacquer Application: A solid piece of lac (resin secreted by insects) is pressed against the rapidly spinning wood on the lathe. The friction generates heat, melting the lac and uniformly coating the wood.

5. Agate Stone Polishing (Kevda): Finally, a smooth agate stone is rubbed vigorously over the hardened lacquer, generating intense heat that blends the colors and results in the iconic glassy, durable finish.
